What Happens in a Distance Reiki Session? Energy, Counselling and Letting Go

People ask me this all the time: how does Distance Reiki work when you're not even in the room?
As a Calgary Reiki practitioner and counsellor, my honest answer is that it's simpler and more curious than you'd expect. So for Episode 12 of the Ember 'n Echo podcast, I recorded a real Distance Reiki session and let you listen in. Here's what's actually going on.
Landmarks, Not Magic
In a Distance Reiki session, I use my own body and my massage table as landmarks. Together they map where you are. If you're watching on camera, you might see my back to you, or me facing you, usually with my eyes closed. I might be sending energy out the window, or working at your feet, because energetically, your feet are down there for me.
Nothing is expected of you. You don't need to believe anything or do anything. Bring an open mind and a curious heart, and that's plenty.
Start With an Intention
Before we begin, I ask whether there's an intention you'd like to hold. You don't have to say it out loud. In this session, the intention was simple: lean into openness and curiosity. That opened up a question I love to explore in both my Reiki and counselling work: what still serves me, and what can I let go of?
I also practice from a place of compassion, in both Reiki and listening. When we move from a place of compassion, we can recognize that patterns that no longer serve us usually started as protection. They were doing a job. As we grow, mature and change, that part of us doesn't always come along for the ride. So we get curious about how it shows up, what's still part of who we are, and what we've simply outgrown.
Where Energy Work Meets Counselling
This session had the debrief built in. After the Reiki wrapped up, we talked through what I noticed, what came up for my client, and how it connected to what's happening in their real life. That's where energy work and counselling meet, and it's the heart of how I practise here in Calgary: Science. Holding. Flow.
Your Body Is Already Talking
In the debrief, we got into somatic awareness. Take the vagus nerve. It runs from the brain down into the body and carries information back up: what's happening in the stomach, the lungs, the heart, even the throat. When your stomach is in knots, your brain receives that as information, and it can be interpreted as emotion. That's why a feeling can seem to show up out of nowhere. Your body has been telling the story all along.
The Brain Loves a Pathway
Our brains love efficiency. They build little highways: this happened, so now this happens, so now I feel this way. Unless we pause and ask whether that's still reasonable, we keep running on something that happened six or sixteen years ago.
Maslow's hierarchy helps here. If your most basic needs, like food, shelter and safety, feel secure, you have room to think about love and connection. If they don't, worry does the driving. And worry, repeated over time, builds pathways of its own. Noticing them is the first step in choosing differently.
The One-Way Valve
One thing I noticed in the session was that my client's energy moved easily. It wasn't stagnant. To me, that says something about their ability to release what doesn't belong to them anymore.
My favourite image for this is a one-way valve. Hold on to what serves you. Everything else can go.
After Your Session
My aftercare is three things: give it three days, and bring water, grace and compassion. Sessions can stir things up, and integration takes time. Go gently.
Is Distance Reiki Right for You?
If you're Reiki-curious, a long-time skeptic, or just wondering what a session would feel like, I hope Episode 12 gives you a clear picture.
You can add the debrief as an extra when you work with me. I'm currently offering a package with Reiki to start and a Soma Counselling session 4-5 days later for an extended integration.
Or you can just show up, receive some energy work, and get on with your day. Both are welcome.
I offer Reiki in person in Marda Loop, Calgary, and Distance Reiki for anyone, anywhere. If you'd like to start the conversation, book a discovery call or a session at embernecho.co, or reach out through the links below.
Tending the ember, honouring the echo.
