Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently asked questions about somatic, trauma-informed counselling and Reiki in Calgary — online and in-person sessions with Ember 'n Echo.
What's your background/training?
I trained and worked as an Exercise Physiologist and counsellor in Australia. Since moving to Calgary, I work as a counsellor, not a clinical therapist, and reiki practitioner — so you get real depth and training, without the formality of a clinical setting.
Are you a therapist? What's the difference between counselling and therapy here?
I'm a counsellor, not a clinical therapist, psychologist, or social worker — so I don't diagnose or treat mental illness, and this isn't a substitute for medical or psychiatric care. What I offer is a steady, trained space to work through what's coming up, at your pace.
If you'd be better served by a regulated professional, I'll tell you and help you find the right person.
Can I claim my session back under my insurance?
Counselling sessions are commonly eligible under Wellness Spending Accounts. Since coverage is set by your individual plan, please check with your provider or HR department to confirm what's included before booking, if reimbursement is something you're hoping to use.
What does "somatic" mean, and why does it matter?
"Somatic" means body-based — the idea that your body holds onto experience as much as your mind does. Tension, a racing heart, a held breath — these aren't separate from your thoughts and feelings, they're part of the same picture. This is where my background of human physiology and anatomy really comes into play. Rather than just talking things through, we notice what your body's already telling you. That's often why people leave not just understanding something, but actually feeling different.
